Alsop High School Year 9s 2-2 Notre Dame High School (Alsop win 4-3 on penalties)

The stage was set for the ECHO Shield Final as Alsop High School's Year 9 team took on Notre Dame High School in what would prove to be a dramatic and unforgettable encounter.

From the first whistle, we took control of proceedings, dominating possession and dictating the tempo of the game through a commanding midfield performance. The only thing missing from our perfect start was Luca, who seemingly believed kick-off was merely a suggestion rather than a fixed time. After arriving fashionably late, he was introduced after five minutes and immediately made his presence felt with an energetic and impactful performance.

Out on the left wing, Max was outstanding. He seemed to be everywhere at once, winning tackles, showing tremendous composure in possession and delivering several dangerous balls into our front pairing of Jack E and Bradley, who worked tirelessly all afternoon, pressing Notre Dame's defence into mistakes.

Despite our dominance, we struggled to convert our chances. That was until Jack E produced a moment of magic worthy of any cup final. Racing onto a pass down the left-hand side, Jack took a touch, dropped his shoulder to cut inside his defender and unleashed a superb strike into the far bottom corner. A goal of real quality and a deserved lead for Alsop.

1-0 Alsop.

Notre Dame responded by making changes, introducing fresh legs and altering their shape to add pace in attack. However, they found little joy against our rock-solid centre-half pairing of Dawid and Aidan, who dealt confidently with everything thrown their way.

We continued to control the middle of the park and repeatedly found success playing through the heart of Notre Dame's defence. Bradley and Jack caused constant problems, with Bradley particularly effective at nipping in front of defenders and stealing possession high up the pitch. On more than one occasion he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, only to be denied by some excellent saves.

As the first half drew to a close, the score remained 1-0. It was a tightly contested game with opportunities at both ends, but our dominance in possession and overall control of the match meant the scoreline felt a fair reflection of the opening 35 minutes.

The second half started more slowly for Alsop and Notre Dame nearly levelled when they struck the crossbar with a half-chance. It would have been harsh on us given the balance of play.

At the other end, we won a corner and Kai delivered an excellent ball into the box. Panic spread through the Notre Dame defence, but we were unable to apply the finishing touch.

Then came another key moment.

Eli, who has been the model of consistency all season, once again demonstrated why so many teams now choose to go around him rather than through him. Covering every blade of grass and winning seemingly every battle, he claimed possession with a brilliant 50-50 challenge before instantly feeding Jack E.

Jack played a clever pass into Bradley's path. Bradley drove at his defender, dropped his shoulder and got his shot away early. The goalkeeper produced another fine save but could only parry the ball into the path of Jack, who calmly slotted home the rebound.

2-0 Alsop.

Halfway through the second half, we looked comfortable and in complete control.

Then football reminded everyone why it is such a cruel game.

Notre Dame threw everything forward and managed to scramble home a scrappy goal that was completely against the run of play.

2-1.

Moments later, they produced a goal of genuine quality. Their forward left his marker standing, cut inside onto his right foot and curled an excellent finish into the bottom corner. It was remarkably similar to Jack's opener.

2-2.

With only minutes remaining, what had looked like a comfortable victory suddenly became a tense and nervy finish. To the boys' credit, they responded brilliantly and piled pressure back onto Notre Dame. Chance after chance came and went, but we couldn't find the decisive breakthrough.

The final whistle sounded.

Penalties.

And this was where our boy wonder between the sticks, Tyler R, decided it was his time to shine.

Notre Dame won the toss and elected to go first. Tyler flew low to his left and produced a superb save to deny the opening penalty.

Up stepped Dawid.

Goal. 1-0 Alsop.

Notre Dame converted their second penalty.

1-1.

Jack E, full of confidence after his two-goal performance, stepped forward next. Attempting an audacious Panenka, he saw the goalkeeper make the save.

Still 1-1.

Notre Dame scored their third penalty.

Max stepped up for Alsop and absolutely thundered his effort towards the top corner. It looked destined for the back of the net before crashing against the crossbar.

Notre Dame now held the advantage.

But Tyler R wasn't finished.

Notre Dame's next taker struck his penalty well, but Tyler launched himself across goal to make another outstanding save.

Bradley was next for Alsop. Knowing a miss would leave us hanging on, he showed nerves of steel, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and finding the bottom corner.

3-2.

Notre Dame scored again and appeared on the brink of victory.

Yet Tyler once more refused to give in. Their next penalty was struck towards his left-hand side and he comfortably pushed it away.

Now it was Kai's turn. Arguably the cleanest striker of a football in the entire squad, he stepped up with confidence. The pressure was immense, but Kai did not disappoint, drilling his penalty into the bottom corner with the goalkeeper nowhere near it.

Sudden Death.

Notre Dame's next taker walked up looking confident. Perhaps a little too confident.

He smashed his effort against the crossbar.

Alsop had the chance to win it.

Up stepped captain fantastic, Aidan.

Having already scored the winning penalty in the semi-final, he clearly enjoys the big occasion. He strode forward and buried a perfect penalty into the bottom corner. The goalkeeper never stood a chance. Truthfully, I'm not convinced even Allison would have got near it.

Alsop win the ECHO Shield Final on penalties!

A fantastic team performance from start to finish. Every player contributed, but special mentions must go to Jack E for his two goals, Max for an outstanding display on the wing, Eli for another midfield masterclass, Dawid and Aidan for their defensive resilience, and of course Tyler R, whose penalty heroics will live long in the memory.

Champions. ECHO Shield Winners. A day this Year 9 team will never forget.
