Alsop students commemorate VE DAY 80

This week students at Alsop High School have commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day. A special event was held in the school library, which included a tea party. The students enjoyed sandwiches, cake and scones with jam and cream. This tea party was part of the Alsop “My Community Matters” initiative.
The young people listened to a presentation about how people of north Liverpool suffered during the Second World War. Walton Church was destroyed by the German Luftwaffe during the May Blitz of 1941. Many families in Index Street and Arnot Street also saw their homes destroyed during the bombing.
Students looked at photos of VE Day which was on Tuesday 8th May, 1945. This was an emotional day that millions of people had been waiting for. People were extremely happy that the fighting had stopped. Throughout Liverpool there were big celebrations and street parties. During the commemorative tea songs and music from the wartime era was played. The tea culminated with a war time quiz.
The students now plan to plant commemorative pots with red, white and blue flowers to remember this significant historical event.
